Fall-Color Run 2000, McCaslin, WI: October 2000

by: Scott Rozman

The First ever MADXJ Games Night Rally was the brain child of Andreas. Instead of just a night trail run, the idea to come up with a friendly little competition was born.

Scott and Andreas set out with the task of coming up with various Checkpoints on McCaslin Mountain and a point system to determine a Winning Team.
For the actual event, it was fortunate that we had a few volunteers to help out at the checkpoints. It seemed as fun watching things progress from "behind the scenes" as it did from being a participant. Andreas was faced with the task of visiting all of the checkpoints, dropping off the checkpoint checkers, setting up signs for the un-manned checkpoints and getting himself to his checkpoint #2.

Fortunately, we had a successful network of radios, using both CB and 2M ham radio, so that those behind the scenes always knew what was going on.... and when necessary, Scott was able to remote navigation to get the checkpoint teams in location. GPS and the map that Andreas made were invaluable for this process.
Scott stayed at camp, tallied scores and coordinated things over the radios.

Below, you can see the results and the final point tallys. "The Short J's" ended up having some difficulty once they got in the Pine Clearing area. Unfortunately, the map is an evolutionary process, so the GPS locations were a bit inaccurate for that area. The two other teams went more from the grid square clue in combination with the word "Pine Clearing" on the map, so were able to continue finding clues. "The Short J's" came back by a bit of intuition and headed for Mission Impossible, a location that was a sure landmark to try. After finding Roy and Andreas at Mission Impossible, they were able to finish the course.

Originally the plan was to only have minimal emphasis on time, but in the true spirit of competition, these teams really managed to make some time on these trails.

To their credit, every came back safe and with not much more than a few underbody dents and scrapes. The remaining checkpoint teams were the last to make it out of the woods after taking a stick through the sidewall of one of Andreas' tires.

It seemed that a great time was had by all. As the teams rolled back into camp, they were really fired up, talking about everything that just happened as they waited to see who would be next to roll back into camp.
